Another question, but unrelated.

I'm 24, taken dutas for awhile now, and at some point in the future I think I'd like to have children. I've heard that dutas stays in your system for a loooong time and I've also heard its bad for pregnant women. Should I stop taking it a year before having children, and also, will it affect my ability to HAVE children in the first place? lower sperm count etc maybe?

So you are taking a drug that you do not know the effects of ??

I think before you stuff pills down your throat do a little research!!!!

Well before I started taking it I did plently of research on the drug and never came across anything saying it would permanently damage your sperm count. Can you please send me a link to where you read this so I can read into the issue further, i.e. how long you have to be taking it for, and at what dose for it to do permanent damage?

3 months ago I looked into this, and found studies on the effects dutasteride in male monkeys had on the fetuses of monkeys they impregnated. The dose needed to defects in some of the babies was much larger than what we take. I suggest people here google it.

Propecia is 99.9% out of your system in 3 days, and can't affect DHT leveles at that dose, though doctors won't let you donate blood until you've been off propecia 30 days. This shows how cautious the medical establishment is.

considering one of the side effects of dutasteride is testicular shrinkage I would have thought a decrease in the volume of sperm would be a given.....

I know from personal experience (and I only used the sh*t for about a 3-4 week period) that I still haven't gotten back my sex drive or have the volume of ejaculate as compared to before.... and this is a bit over 3 moths since I took my last dutasteride gel tablet and after taking other supplements to increase my natural hormone levels.

I've fathered two boys while on Propecia, and it didn't take a long time to get my wife pregnant either.

dutasteride is a fair bit stronger than finasteride....... I'm not saying you can't father children either.... just that it CAN have certain effect on people (and drawing from my own personal reactions to it).

the sides I had from finasteride took 4-6 months to appear... the sides from dutasteride took less than 4 weeks (there was a good few months gap between taking the two as well).

It really pisses me off when people come out with stupid comments about the health risks but are unable to back up their claims without any evidence. I found one article which stated in the test group the subjects experienced a reduction in sperm count of between 18-23%. However it did not state this was a permanent side effect. Of all the sites I researched including the original glaxo report, a permament reduction in sperm count was not mentioned. Therefore I think it is safe to assume that this is not a real problem, unless someone can supply evidence that it is.

Effects of PNU157706, a dual 5alpha-reductase inhibitor, on rat epididymal sperm maturation and fertility.

* Henderson NA,
* Robaire B.

Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Sperm entering the epididymis gain progressive motility and fertilizing ability in a process termed maturation. The functional dependence of the epididymis on dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is well established, yet few studies have examined the consequences on the epididymis of inhibiting DHT formation. We have shown that inhibition of both isoforms of 5alpha-reductase (types 1 and 2), the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT, has pronounced effects on epididymal gene expression. In the present study, we investigate whether inhibiting 5alpha-reductase has consequences on epididymal sperm maturation. Rats were treated with vehicle or 10 mg/kg/day PNU157706, a dual-type inhibitor, for 28 days. Fertility and several key facets of sperm maturation were analyzed. Changes in sperm motility were assessed by computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA). Changes in sperm morphology were assessed by CASA and electron microscopy. The motility of spermatozoa from the cauda epididymidis of treated animals showed a significant decrease in both the percentage of motile and progressively motile sperm as well as altered motion parameters. The morphology of cauda epididymal spermatozoa was also adversely affected by the treatment; the most prominent effect was a markedly elevated proportion of sperm that retained their cytoplasmic droplet. Matings with treated males resulted in fewer successful pregnancies and a higher rate of preimplantation loss. Progeny outcome was unaffected. The compromised sperm motility and morphology likely contribute to the subfertility of inhibitor-treated rats. Our results indicate a role for dual 5alpha-reductase inhibitors in further studies of epididymal physiology and as a potential component of a male contraceptive.

The guy asked a question, he didn't make a stupid comment or unsubstantiated claim. Someone else mentioned that it had taken a long time in his personal experience for sides from propecia to leave him. No need to get really pissed off.
