Would You Put 15 Yr Old On Dutasteride?

Our son will be severely bald fast if we do nothing - which feels sh*t. He's been prescribed 0.7 mg Dutasteride & 0.1 Estrogen blocker, plus topical Dutasteride. There is so much horror on the net, but the clinic insist they have had zero problems with libido etc, and I think the key there is the Estrogen blocker. It's just bloody hard to be a Mum making these decisions with the potential to get it so very wrong, I am happy going one way (treatment) and miserable the next. No treatment feels sh*t too. No amount of zinc or Biotin etc will save him from his fathers male pattern baldness level 7 which happened in a few short months at 26. DS's hair started thinning 14.5 years, but really lost the plot a few weeks ago at 15 & 3 mths.

Hi I'm sorry you and your son have to deal with this. If it were my son, I would say no as his body is still developing. I'd probably have him use Rogaine to slow it down and pray that a new treatment comes out in next few years. I'd like to others opinions, especially from doctors that visit the forum. Are you able to provide the name of the clinic that is prescribing this?

Sorry mum. But you married a bald guy. It comes with the package....
Yep, fully aware of that. Hubby's self-esteem plummeted at 26 when it struck him, the impact on a 15 year old would be 10-fold. Putting it off a few years would bound to be beneficial to him socially/emotionally, but clearly at what cost is the question. At the moment it doesn't feel worth it.

Would you consider using just the topical Dutasteride? Our local GP wasn't against that until he turns 18, it was a drug being metabilized through the liver etc that he had a problem with.

You don't have to be a wanker. Hubby was ball-bearing when we met. Our son is already socially isolated being autistic. One would think you would find people supportive on a hairloss thread. I don't want to give my son this drug, I was not there when he was prescribed it. My husband was. It is me that is pushing for a reason not to do it, but I also desperately don't want to let down my son and make him more of an oustider than he already is. Have a nice day.

Have you asked your Doctor about putting him on minoxidil? Could give him a few years maintenance until he’s more age appropriate to take finasteride/dutasteride.

what is his norwood now? you got any pics?

i dont think its smart using any hardcore oral meds but im no expert

topicals seems a much better bet

has your son had a biopsy to see exactly how much his hair has thinned?

if you use dutasteride on a 15 yo you will probably end up with a kid suffering from even more insecurities due to a small member and a myriad of sexual issues. If you think bald is bad wait till you see people plagued with a myriad of side effects due to 5ar inhibition. For the love of god let him develop first

@NzinOz How many extramarital affairs have you had since your husband's hair went bye bye?
Your self-esteem must be zero to post such a s***.
A guy lurking 24/7 on this forum talking bad to others must have serious problems.

BTT:
You should probably get a second opinion. Estrogen blockers and 5ar blockers in a 15 year old are a bit too much. They are both hormones needed in the development of your son. Read a bit about underdevelopment of organs etc. due to hormonal imbalance.

I agree. I'd like to see this guy who's lurking the Hairlosstalk forums 24/7.

I would not feel comfortable giving someone that young dutasteride.
I agree that you should get a second opinion and that rogaine is a an ok option in the short term. Was Finasteride ever mentioned? I don't think that would be a stellar option either, but why the jump immediately to Dutasteride?

He's 6 ft tall and harboured a large adult size member in his shorts at least the last two or three years, although of course I haven't seen it in the flesh. I won't give him the oral, but am interested in the topical to protect what hair he has. He'd be a 3 on Norwood, losing most of the ressessed area in days, the stuff on top having thinned in general over 8 months. He doesn't have the bald spot at the back yet, but the potential is there. Even the hair around the sides of his head would have only grown 8 mm in the past 4 months. Sorry, have no idea how to create a URL to share a photo.

He's been looked at under a microscopic camera. His follicles are dying.

@NzinOz There was a 16 year old who used Dutasteride and regrew all of his hair. However, I wouldn't touch it at that age. I took finasteride at 19 and still suffered damage that failed to fully heal to this day when I'm 23. I still have some hair left.

If all fails, consider looking into hair systems. @Noah can advise you about them. Modern hair systems are or can be made almost undetectable to touch and sight.
I'm not wearing them myself since I still have some hair left, I don't want to damage them, but If I ever turn NW7 it'll be this or shaving.

Another Kiwi in Aus, traitor... kidding

But if you are close to Sydney could be worth looking into this posted by @Georgie , it's a long shot & a bit pricey but who knows

https://www.hairlosstalk.com/intera...e-treatments-of-androgenetic-alopecia.113969/

I'd personally say stay away from dutasteride / finasteride especially at his age, I took finasteride at 21 & couldn't get boners after a month hardly, that was far more devastating than hair loss for me. Luckily after stopping finasteride I was able to go back to normal more or less, but some poor bastards remain impotent. Guess the topical could be OK but do we even know if it goes systematic or not?
