What I've noticed in foreign students is that they really really try hard to get an internship (a non-paid one). That basically gets them in the system, from there onwards they start good relationship with their manager and so on. Long story short, they not only easily get hired full-time, but they also get H1 visas and work in US then.
The point of the example being, that at this point you have nothing to lose - you have already lost considerable time & you work at mcdonalds. First select few companies that you would really like to work in and work hard in getting a 3-month intern position. When you get that, be in the good books of your manager - that'll establish your contacts and secure your future! Present economy is very very tough to find a job in, so have to be smart in your job search.
