Whether Trump is corrupt or not - how does you knowing this alter any one thing?

People on social media are fixated with politics - a lot of it is arm chair activism and virtue signalling, of course - and I see friends becoming divided over these abstract matters. I'm also seeing people quit facebook because they are sick of it becoming so serious.

Virtue signalling is a cancer.

i'll vote in the next election.baldness and apathy from it + my usual agoraphobia kept me from doing so this year. but knowing about trump will better inform me for the future

i also like knowing what's going on.

its not just abstract matters, political opinions are a manifestation of your personality.

like aren't you going to vote at least once? i have before, just not in a national election. you will have to know politics then if you want to make a good decision

Nope - each time you vote you support the process.

I do, however, focus on being a decent person. Offering compliments, helping out friends and neighbours, and being a good person. All of this matters more than being knowledgeable on, say, middle eastern politics.

I like what you're saying.
Also, we here are lucky living in the west as political discourse is mostly abstract for the average citizen.
And goddamn it... I will gladly give my life for it to remain so.

Are we all virtue signalling here?

I don't think so, I think a few of us want to learn.
No, although there is unorthodox behaviour exhibited on this forum where we see a reverse trend of value signalling.

Its almost a race to the bottom in terms of aesthetics with the ugliest users with the highest norwoods who appear to hold the most sway. I've literally seen pages of arguments with people trying to say they are uglier or balder than the other poster.

About social media (and, therefore, about virtue and value signalling), Umberto Eco wrote something very interesting:

That is the perfect quote for this argument!

@JohnsonDDG ,

There are plenty of goods to discussing current events, it makes you a better citizen, and in my case, it's largely how I learned to speak English properly.

That said I do feel like a failure when I engage in the political discussions here. They're typically not conducted at a high level, due to the low number of posters, as well as some posters not knowing very much. It's not a great investment of time.

I should be reading and occasionally commenting at more elite communities, where I'm being challenged. I've interacted with people online, whereby nearly everytime I argue with them I find myself humbled quickly. They're sharp enough to make me change my mind on things, due to their knowledge, their ability to reason and communicate. Those are the people I should read.

A notable exception here are the posters who tell me about life in Europe or the Middle East, I do learn something there.

You are never going to learn anything when you live in a country if you just get your knowledge from debates online and the news media you approve of.

Its a huge country that is extremely diverse depending where you live...If you dismiss peoples own life experiences from the area they live in the background they have for people who are just 'good' at debating you are losing a lot of different perspectives.

You kind of look down on people you don't deem to be on your intellectual level.

I'm surprised so many people liked this comment it sounded so academically elitist to me.

I deliberately follow a lot of media that I don't approve of. I make a point of going out there and finding experts who follow views opposite to my own, and listening to them.

Nope, I only look down on anti-intellectuality. I don't mind people not knowing things as we all have things we don't know. When people however don't want to know, I lose respect.

I'm saying that I want to learn from elites -- that's not elitism that's the opposite of elitism.

“Real dialogue isn’t about talking to people who believe the same things as you.” ― Zygmunt Bauman

I dont think people who post about politics here are doing this though.
