Hi all, i am now 34, diffuse thinner since 18, I am under medication of dutasteride and oral minoxidil and considering hair transplant.
For diffuse type of thinning, a certain amount of density should have been lost before a hair transplant can be done or it may causes damge to existing hair.

Can you give me some advice on my case, if i have reach that status of considerable density loss? If I can do the hair transplant, what is the estimated grafts needed.
Thanks all.

IMO you still have a lot of hair you risk losing, if you transplant new hairs into the diffusing area. Trauma from surgery - direct or indirect - can accelerate your hair loss. Direct trauma would mean that your existing hair follicles are damaged when new recipient incisions are made. Indirect trauma would be from telogen effluvium, general trauma that accelerates the hair cycle. Worst case scenario, you transplant grafts into the area, you lose some (or a lot) of your existing hair, and you paid a lot of money to look exactly the same, or worse.

A lot of guys with hair transplants would do anything to have as much hair as you still have now.

Even in the best scenario, a hair transplant will not restore a full head of hair. In the best scenario, it creates the illusion of a full head of hair. Maybe there are non-surgical things you can do now, that will help create that illusion using the hair you already have right now.

Dear Samrthen,

I have struggled a lot. Thanks for your sensible advice and your words are healing.
I think I can make the decision now, i would delay the procedure and wish i dont need it in the future.

Thanks.

It’s not too bad. A friend of mine actually had his transplantation done in Turkey, and he’s really happy with the results. The procedure went smoothly, and the quality of care was excellent. It’s great to see how many people are exploring international options for medical procedures and finding success. If you’re considering traveling for something similar, jetblue airways customer service will probably be happy to help you find a good flight. They’ve always been pretty helpful in terms of booking flights and offering travel advice, so I’m sure they’ll assist you in finding something that fits your schedule and budget.

Since you've been dealing with diffuse thinning for a long time and are currently on dutasteride and oral minoxidil, you're in a good position to stabilize your hair loss before considering a transplant. You're right that a certain level of density loss is needed before a transplant, as implanting grafts too early can risk shock loss to existing hairs.

The best way to determine if you're a good candidate is through a detailed consultation with a hair transplant surgeon. They’ll assess your donor area, the level of miniaturization in the thinning areas, and how much density can realistically be restored. Based on your case, if you're looking for full coverage, you might need anywhere from 2,000 to 3,500+ grafts, depending on the severity of your thinning.

If you haven't already, getting a trichoscopy (scalp analysis) can help measure miniaturization and determine whether a transplant is the best option for you right now. Some surgeons may also suggest SMP (scalp micropigmentation) or further medical treatment if your existing hair is still holding on.

Have you had any in-person consultations yet? Would love to hear what the specialists have recommended for your case!

Best,
Nathan
