Don't Wait, It Doesn't Have To Be Like That

Does it make any sense to try finasteride if you've already had sexual sides just from RU though?

Try a low dose of finasteride and avoid thinking about sides. Start with .25mg or even a microdose if you're really paranoid

RU is more sketchy than finasteride anyway imo. finasteride probably should've been what you tried first

Hmm I haven't seen much evidence that low dosing finasteride makes any difference? finasteride is powerful even in small amounts

To be honest when I was NW2 the only option was 2% minoxidil.
When finasteride and 5% were ready, I was already NW3,5
And you know how useful cures are when you are 3,5 already :-(
Apart from this, the picture is HILARIOUS

Your opinion is basically a fact lmao

My experience is continued hair loss after 1 year of 1.25 mg Finasteride, and with topicals like Alpicort and RU I see a turnaround after 2 weeks.
RU has some side effects as well but not as much as Finasteride.

Whats your oppinion on topical finasteride, do you think it has potential as a good topical AA ? I'm talking about the H&W one with liposomal delivery.

Probably, but it will go systemic most likely. The only benefit would be being able to use a lower dose so that less serum DHT is reduced.

Also, topical dutasteride would perhaps make more sense.

I think the 90% success rate of finasteride is a myth even if we do not consider side effects.
If it was really 90% we would see so fewer bald people around.

I don't really mind it going systemic, i'm just wondering if it's more effective than the pill. There are studies that show it inhibits around 40% more DHT in the scalp area.

If you're destined to become NW5 in your early 20's, I really don't think finasteride will make much of a difference.

Maybe you'll reach your NW5 level a couple of years later but that's it.

Unpopular opinion: people who claim finasteride maintained their NW2 for 20 years would have been NW3 had they never taken finasteride.

We just can't know how aggressive their hair loss was.

Hell I know people who have been NW3 for 10 years and they've never even heard of finasteride.

Ehh dk about that, my brother had a nice fat thinning/bald spot on crown and major thinning on hairline at 23. Got on finasteride and is now a dense nw2 at 30 with MINOR thinning at the crown.

Edit: our dad was nw5 at 23

Having it enter topically should mean that a lower dose can achieve the same amount of DHT inhibition in the scalp and consequently a higher dose can achieve more DHT inhibition in the scalp, with less systemic side effects. In theory.

I am not sure about the liposomal version, I thought the Polichem one was supposed to be the best? The H&W one has apparently been tried by some people and they got the same side effects because the dose is high, not sure about the results.

False I believe, based on a few points. If you view the 10 year Finasteride trial, they had all types of Norwood and ages. 9/10 maintained over a 10 year period. If that's not enough, take into account the number of aggressive cases on the forum. Remember the forum will have the worst cases, the rare male pattern baldness sufferers that are like 2% of all Androgenetic Alopecia cases. Yet how many of them have got on finasteride ( while thinning in a Norwood 6 pattern in their early 20s) and been bald 2 years later? Have you seen any pictures? Personally I haven't because it doesn't happen. I believe you're spot on in that it's a losing battle for them on finasteride, they will continue to lose hair but not that quickly.

A few cases I know in real life of people on finasteride and thinning in Norwood 6/7 pattern in their youth. A decade later they still have their hair, it's thinner for sure though. But a decade is a significant time especially when in your prime - they also didn't take finasteride early enough either. Going bald in 20s versus 30s, still a big difference. The option of hair transplants and saving native hair with finasteride will give them a respectable amount of hair even if it's not full head. No finasteride for them = game over in mid 20s. Other members in their family who didn't use finasteride or have access to it (Dad, brothers) were finished in their early 20s.

I understand your reasons for not trying finasteride but hypothetically lets say you had attempted to. Your situation would be better now. You would have more hair than both your transplants combined, add in those two transplants, you may have a decent head of hair. And your case was on of the most aggressive known, so it shows the impact that finasteride could have had. Remember year by year, the difference in hair counts between those who take finasteride and those that don't, continues to increase. It's really not easy replacing native hair, which is why medication is so important if one values his/her hair.

I like the graph a lot but I wonder:
Did they give some poor balding lads a placebo pill for FIVE YEARS?
Well that is kind of mean

Lol I used to think the same when I saw such graphs. But nobody on finasteride or placebo will know which group they belong to - double blinded clinical trials. Still, when you sign up to such a trial, you will be aware that there is a drug for hair loss BUT you have to be happy to play Russian Roulette with your hair and end up in either group :)

Surely by the 1 year mark the placebo takers could see by how badly their hair was going to sh*t, that either they were getting the placebo or the drug was poor.

This happens also with fringe cancer/terminal illness treatments. Double blind means you might be taking a sugar pill.

In an episode of Doctor House, the Afro American doctor makes sure the patient "13" (terminal disease) receives the real drug rather than the placebo, because no one wants to be on the placebo when it's life, death or hair.

Damn man , discouragement post of the day for a 19 year old diffuse thinning and 3 months into finasteride
