I grew up in a religious environment, which may contribute to me taking wigs for granted.
The converse though, is the reason for why women cover up their hair. Covering up their hair is synonymous with hiding their beauty.
Orthodox Jewish women have to be covered beyond the arms and knees, can't show their hair if they're married, and can't sing in front of men who are not family. They also can't be alone in a room with a man who is not family, and cannot touch a man who is not family.
