I teach English at a Japanese junior high school. I've been at it for 2 and a half years. Nobody has mentioned it before now. I had a hair transplant in August at my hairline and temples. The transplanted area is covers except where I part my hair at the centre. Today students pointed at it and said bald in Japanese, I knew what they meant but when they said it I ignored it and hoped they would leave it, but no, they went on to look up the word in the dictionary and then shout out bald. A crushing moment... Totally mortifying...
I think they just meant the transplanted hairs that are still thin, or at least I hope so... If my scalp is visible elsewhere under classroom lighting I don't know.

I visited Japan a couple of years ago and all the young men had such fabulous hair and great hairdos. I didn't see a lot of balding men..
Your students were very rude!

I think they were specifically referring to my transplanted hair, or at least I hope... Kind of surprised nobody had mentioned it before now... Well one adult woman once asked me at a party what was up with my hair and pointed at my transplanted hair site.
Sucks having hair loss in Asia, everywhere you go, every man under 40 has such amazing hair... Funnily enough, Japanese women often have notably thinning hair and very high hairlines, even teenagers. Seems only Japanese men got the good hair genes

I actually have a 12 year old girl student with really messed up hair, high hairline, thinning crown and very receded sides. Does t seem to bother her at all, very happy, cheerful and seemingly confident young lady. If f I had her hair I would be devastated... Amazing young girl.

Hello, don't think about it. If it's the first time in 2,5 years, then most probably they refer to your transplanted hairs.

Wait until your hair sprout out. And don't give them a low grade because of that.

I'm sorry this happened to you :(.

I think this kind of thing is cultural, I could never imagine children do that in Belgium for example. I've had dozens of bald(ing) teachers in middle school and high school, or even university, and no one ever called them bald, either in front of them or when they were talking about the teacher in private.

I've been on dates with a few Asian girls, and from what they told me, balding is seen as a curse in China for example, if you're balding, it means you don't take care of yourself (I know, enraging).

Also, Japan? Look no further than their video games or anime, all the characters (except maybe Krillin :p) have fabulous hair, no wonder balding is seen as abnormal.
Asian people do seem pretty blunt.

My landlord is Asian and she once saw me after gaining ten pounds (I'm pretty slim) and said, 'Oh, are you getting fat?'

Most people in the west would never say that to someone who gained a few pounds.

I'd buy you gun but only if you promised you'll use it on yourself.

absolutely give them a low grade because of this

then put up a giant photo of Tsuji-sama in the classroom and make them ask him for forgiveness everyday

Well, at least they are honest, now let us imagine how many people "in the west" are thinking like "Oh, the loser is going bald", but don´t say a word about it....... This can make you really paranoid.

I'd prefer people just to think it.

Imagine being reminded of it every ten minutes!

If there's something I can do to change it I'd rather people say it to my face. But not repeatedly.

If there's nothing I can do to change it I'd rather not be reminded of it.

I see your point, though at the moment I am thinking about my hair every second...... Well, I have to say I am (mostly) diffuse with thinning all over my head and when it is grown out I get large curls so I think I should be able to cover it. At least I hope so, I will never really know. Plus, you don´t know how people judge you on a subconscious level.....

Of course, it is different for the NW3+ guys......

never go as bald(ing) in Asia if you aren't older 50

it is worse than being fat and short 10000 times

I think so, although a woman did make a comment a year ago, my students never did and my friends comments suggesting me to get a man bun style leads me to believe most were oblivious to my loss...

I guess at 4 months I have about 25-30% of my final result so the thinness of the new hairline draws more attention to it...

Damn though... I've been dreading this day for a long time...
