Here is a great example of a pretentious prick trying to compensate his lack of social skills and "fitting in" with being cultured and intelligent lol. Guess what, seeing through bullshit and running from it doesn't make you intelligent, it makes you the exact opposite: a dumb pussy. you're promoting the idea of being reclusive in order to be cultured and intelligent, that's not what intelligence is.

Actually, @That Guy is genuinely intelligent.

I recognize some of what he says. I was in engineering for a year and it was a difficult environment, the people in the program were definitely anti-intellectual. The top hobbies were playing the card game "a**h**", and getting wasted. The most popular section of the newspaper was the comics. People resented the concept of learning the course material, and preferred cheating, which was encouraged and socially validated.

I remember making an effort with that crowd back in the summer of 2004.

I joined in an evening of fun and watched "Man vs Beast" on television and laughed when I was expected to laugh. It wasn't really for me.

When I was a teenager I thought everyone who went to university would be incredibly intellectual.

Even working as a teacher I'm surprised by how many fellow teachers can be anti-intellectual.

Many of them don't even read books or follow current affairs.

Really? Almost all teachers of my high school are actually intellectual and very cultured, not only in their field of work but also in general. However I noticed that language teachers tend to be less intellectual than their colleagues

It seems to be around 50/50.

I imagine the literature or philosophy department might have much different numbers.

I have worked in a big investment bank, we had a floor dedicated for traders nobody could go there without permission, those guys were the sharpest of the firm they brought big bucks and they did whatever the hell they wanted even bringing cocaine to work (which was the main reason why nobody was allowed to go there) if you saw those guys outside of work you would say straight up they're just a bunch of assholes idiots, but they're not, they knew exactly when to switch it off and once they did you get an instant reminder of why they make money as much as they do. for me that's what intelligence is, balancing between both.

You're missing the point, plausibly because you like to argue.

I actually knew the people I was referring to, the ones in the engineering program. I spent a year there, they weren't just a group of people on a different floor that I heard about from a friend of a friend of a friend but never actually interacted with, as is the case with you and the traders. It's also relevant to That Guy's comments as he works in an adjacent field.

As for the traders, you reveal your own ignorance of the world by presenting such a dim example. You assume that "they do cocaine" is somehow an argument against intelligence or intellectuality, when in fact it's understood by anyone with a clue that plenty of very smart people do hard drugs. It's actually mundane for brilliant, hard-working people top do hard drugs. Further, I actually know people who have gone into finance. I don't mean people that I've seen on the elevator, people whom I heard "do cocaine" (oh no oh no oh no that's so naughty), I mean I know actual people who have gone into finance, trading, investment firms, etc. They don't fit your description at all -- I know for a fact that they are mostly obviously intelligent. I see those guys outside of work and they do not come off as "a**h** idiots", the fact that you think so demonstrates your own lack of knowledge.

I will not bother explaining these points to you any further.

You may think I'm joking but the guy to the left could be attractive.

If you look closely there is nothing wrong with his eyes, nose, mouth or hairline.

He has bad skin, obesity, and zero style; all of these could be fixed in 1 year.

You have to look at the template:

I always stop reading the moment someone uses the infamous "you're missing the point" argument, what follows is always a distortion of what's being said to fit their own arguments. you're not an exception to this rule.

I think you're referencing a classic stereotype here.
I'd be surprised if 49 percent of this is true.

I kind of get what you're saying although you come across as a little narrow and harsh.
The point where I roll my eyes and think less of someone is the point where they actually describe themselves as "intellectual."

This is not for the individual to decide.
