The body uses carbohydrates (sugars) as it's primary fuel source.

Once carbohydrates have been used, then fat is used as a main fuel source.

Low carbs = quicker transition into "ketosis", the mode in which fat is the primary source of fuel.

High carbs are good if you run or expend a lot of energy but don't really need to lose much or any fat, as exercise takes care of it.

All stored energy is in the form of fat. Hence, carbs, protein, alcohol, fat, are all stored as lipids (fats). It's important for insulation.

Simple really, but your energy use in a 24 hour period is what matters, make sure whatever you take in, is used properly in your lifestyle.

One major benefit of a low carb diet is it forces you to eat cleaner and stay away from processed food. If you don't figure out some ways to get creative with veggies your variety shrinks.

Broiled salmon steak and mixed green salad for tonight.

Thanks Guys.

So what if you want to gain some weight. What would be the best diet? The best carbs to eat that aren't processed? Potatoes? Pasta? Rice?

Also, we should have a thread with ideas for food. I really do get bored when going round a super market these days. I eat the same food each week. That salmon steak sounds delicious.

Potato, pasta and rice are all bad, they all have a pretty high glycemic index, thus they'll raise your blood sugar levels fast and cause problems that way. Fresh veggies are the best source of carbs.

I'm on the candida diet.

F****** sick of it. Low Carb eating sucks big ones.

What? Eating tasty, unprocessed foot instead of dry processed junk that all tastes the same sucks? Wow, well ok.

I usually use some mayonaise (real, not light) on salad. That is allowed on candida diet. I don't eat sugar, wheat, vinegar or starchy vegetables either. I remember that cheese of some sort is also allowed on the candida diet.

Diets don't work for me.

Educate yourself about food. I done TONS of research for like 5 years, I overdone it. I can usually judge the healthiest meal out of ten, roughly the calories too, and the proportion of carbs, protein and fat, and an essential vitamin+mineral profile. That took a long time and is just natural considering the man hours I put into reading.

So I now don't plan much really. I lost weight by just eating when I was hungry, picked variety of things, and avoided heavy meals after 6-7. I ate the healthy and the unhealthy. I really am terrible with plans, so this was the only way I could make any progress, I needed to learn everything, so that I could have freedom. Exercise I avoided initially as I didn't want to take on too much. Nowadays I just exercise when I feel that I should exercise, I don't say "3 times a week" or make any plan for it, sometimes you make a plan, and half the time you really don't have motivation to run at 7pm, or noon, or whenever. I find that if I just exercised when I felt like it, it'd usually be 3 times a week anyway, and I'd be happier that way. That's me though, some others might function a lot better with structure and routine, I completely fail with routines. :(

The diet I'm on is fun, I'm eating much more calories than I used to but I just avoid carbs, except those that come from vegetables. I eat loads of fat and protein in different forms and can hardly keep up my current weight (I don't need to lose weight, I'm on this diet for different reasons). It really isn't a diet (I hate that word when it's used as a synonyme for losing weight), it's more like a natural way to eat.

The problem with a low carb diet is it can give you kidney stones. You have to drink lots of water to avoid that from happening. For me, I do best with meals very similar to the Zone diet. My body responded better to the Zone than low carb. However the key is exercise and weight training really. Has anyone tried the Every Other Day Diet from Jon Benson. I am also doing his 7 minute muscle program and it is very intense but allows you to spend less time working out for people who are really busy. I kind of do his Every Other Day Diet sort of too. I have a few meals a week that I "cheat" so to speak.

These foods are generally high on the GI score but depending on various factors like fiber content, cooking time and combination with fat and acids, these foods can have lower GI values.

Whole grain pastas and breads combined with fats like olive oil, butter and other fats can have a medium GI values...

Cold potato salad with mayo or vinegar or lemon and olive oil is ok ....combining it with protein like a good piece of chicken or fish in the same meal will reduce the glycimic effect of the potato

Rice like Basmati has a medium GI level, and the glycimic effect can be reduced even more by the foods and condiments you combine it with in the same meal.

I became interested in the GI diet when I saw it helped me with inflammation.

Why make it the hard way and combine stuff like that? I mean, c'mon, potato and rice ain't that tasty anyways. At least I have found it very easy to quit eating them along with bread. And I ate bread like a maniac before. Everything with lots of sugar tastes so sweet nowadays that I practically can't eat it. I can't believe that I also added lots of sugar on coffee, now seeing my dad do it makes me wanna puke.

I have to do some research on that, I firmly believe that could be just another myth. Just like the "your brain needs lots of carbs to function" crap. Or "eating fat will raise your cholesterol levels".

the key is to not have lotts of anything.... everything in moderation or you will either get tired of it or sick from it.

Rice and salad is one of the best side dishes I can think of for a nice piece of fish, grilled chicken or steak. I love how the rice soaks the juices of the vinagrette and tomatoes from the salad on my plate....... so goood.

Currie dishes go perfect with basmati rice...

If you tell yourself that sugar or any other food is poison and you cannot eat it... you might end up craving it later on.... (unless you cant eat certain foods due to a specific medical condition of course)

look at the french .... they eat bread, chocolate and wine among other goodies...and are a considered a healthy nation.

I never add extra sugar to anything , but enjoy a good desert whenever I want to. I always eat healthy mediterreanean / GI diet but whenever I feel like porking out I do so.... it works for me.

Everyone can eat the way the want to, I have no problem with that. I am not going to go back eating high GI stuff because my skin simply can't take it.

Maybe, but it's been almost a year and I'm doing fine without that stuff. Just looking at how healthy my body is now is enough to convince me to steer away from that stuff. I also tell myself that cigarettes are poison but I have never smoked a whole one in my life. I don't crave cigarettes.

thats what I was refering to when I said that diet acomodates to certain health issues, and some foods become no-no´s.

I tried meat for the first time (in over a year) yesterday, as a favor to a friend.

Amazing, really. And so filling!

In all seriousness, I got a body high. My depth perception was off, too, as I really did feel high!

It's what us scholar types call a meatgasm

P.S low carb diets suck

And why is that? Can't be the health factor 'cause in that aspect it wins high-carb diet hands down.

I'm quite certain that you need AT LEAST AS MUCH carbs as you do protein to keep/build muscle. Also wouldn't you always be tired without a source of fast releasing energy? Imo it's Rubbish, it may have some application to really obese people i guess though.
