I'm not rushing into anything. She's very special, believe me or not, none of you will change my mind. Being (or used to be...) tall/dark/handsome guitar guy with long hair got me many girls, so I've experienced quite a few. After I met this girl, I was quite certain I wanted to share something big with her. I'm sure I could find someone else later, if anything ever went south. This isn't about settling, this is about a personal life decision I've made; to do something else with my life, with someone.

I know what you mean...women like good-looking long haired band members. And they like the singers and guitars players the most.

So you're out of the band huh?

Just going off of what I've been told. I'd disagree though.

They do. With hair. Joe Satriani isn't talked about being a looker.

Out of the scene (partially related to my male pattern baldness)...but still play.

Yup. Pop careers can be pretty dependent on hair.

It looks like a few guys without hair can break through but not a lot.

I think hair is a big asset if you want a career in pop music.

I was there too... Still am. I was the guy with thick, long, blond locks. Girls loved it, especially the heavy metal girls. It got me so much attention, I remember girls in college always wanted to brush it and braid it. I still get compliments sometimes, but my hair is significantly thinner than it used to be. I can't ever be the bald guy. I've often considered what I would do if things got worse... dutasteride would be the first option. Then hair transplants. If things still kept going south and no new treatments emerged, I'd honestly consider the worst. But that's a problem for further down the road...

What do you mean by "the worst?"

What is the worst?

They do love our hair when it's long, don't they?

I mean suicide. It's something I gave serious consideration when 2 and a half years ago when I first began treatment, and something I would still consider as an option if things got that bad again.

Aren't you like NW2.5? And you would kill yourself over hairloss? You can almost guarantee not ever being slick bald if you have the money for transplants.

I think 24 is young to get married these days too, hair loss or not. And I know some people think Fred is Mr. Negativity, but I do agree that, being so young, she might not feel the same about you if you can no longer sport that long-hair rocker look to which she is deeply attracted. Take a long, hard look at your relationship before you leap. There's a female member here named EvilLocks who is very pretty but got dumped by her boyfriend when she started losing her hair.

I always laugh when women tell me being bald doesn't matter. Not laughing at EvilLocks- I personally wouldn't dump a girl for hairloss for obvious reasons. But the majority of people can be ruthless about balding, way more than people want to think.

They always say it's no big deal until it happens to them.

The majority of guys here would fight to the death to be a Norwood 2.5 with decent density.

Yeah I can almost see it now,
that mysteriously fair and fateful day,
new and bygone sufferers alike
have feverishly pined and fought for
comes to it's rightful and ripe golden fruition,

When I am standing triumphantly o'er the lifeless carcass of thine enemy
gloating at it's final long awaited demise
Taking my proper turn to spit in the dead devil's eyes
and I shout with thunderous elation, "We now own the day"!

I yield to the overbearing authority of my restored vanity
and in a display of honor to my fallen brethren
I unceremoniously toss my victoriously recaptured mane
boastfully in Androgenetic Alopecia's hideous ghost-white face

I feel the power and the glory resurging
and circulating through my tired system once more
Like the last touch from the hand of a departed lover,
I squeeze tight to the glorious memory
Before I too succumb to my mortal wounds.

You're not alone. I often have considered that as well, if things got bad. Yeah, I used to get lots of compliments. I used to love it when girls played with my hair...now I hate it, I can feel their fingers on my scalp. Girls used to be jealous of my hair...it was so thick and curled at the ends. Now its a dying mess.

Long hair is especially problematic when it comes to hair loss. A lot of guys who wear their hair shorter can look like they have a good amount of hair for quite some time after hair loss starts.

Guys like us who wear our hair long can't make it look presentable if it thins because when you have long hair you need enough hair so that the lower layers of hair can support the higher layers of hair.
If you don't have enough hair the whole pile of hair seems to fall and it looks like a deflated cake.

I wore it like that (deflated cake) for a few months because I did not want to let go of the long length but after a few months I had to chop it short so I could look normal.
I had to start wearing my hair shorter like a regular salesman looking Joe at about 27 and at about 30 I had to start wearing a crew cut. Now I wear it very short or even
shaved off. If I don't do this I won't even look normal.

Hair loss FORCES you to chop the length of your hair and if you're a big-hair rock-n-roll type of guy then your whole life changes.

I actually feel the opposite. With it longer, I'm able to use a really good concealer, and thicken it up. If it was shorter I think it would be more obvious. I'm sorry you had to have it cut, the thought of that ever makes me cringe.

Hair loss forces you to chop the length of your hair.

Tell me about it. When my hair got bad I was forced to chop my waist-length brown hair a bit shorter than shoulder length to make it appear a bit thicker. I couldn't keep those long and stringy locks anymore. I miss the hair that I used to have so much, and hate the shorter hair cut on me. It hurt especially bad when I went to a nightclub a few weeks back and this guy I went to school with and hadn't seen for a long time asked me why I cut my hair so short and that he liked long hair better. Little did he know I was actually forced to cut my hair because of the hair loss...

Same here. Trust can be difficult to begin with, now combine male pattern baldness paranoia and the complex is set.

I'm sorry, comments like those cut the deepest from people. Norwegian men can be exceptionally judgmental and shallow. Have you ever thought about a very long with, with bangs to hide it a bit better? That's my final option. Not really concerned with others thinking/knowing its a wig, its more for me feeling "normal."

If anyone has seen the photos I posted, how am I looking? I'd like some feedback...positive or not. Will finasteride/nizoral save the day? Or am I doomed.

It sucks. It can leave you literally no choice but to cut your hair because if you keep trying to wear it long after a certain point you'll look odd and people might actually point at you. As I lost more and more hair I could see it in people's eyes that they were having to adjust their vision to my "deflated cake" look because they weren't used to seeing people's hair look like that. Concealer works for awhile but after a few more years as you lose more hair the underlying layers of hairs aren't thick enough to support the upper layers of hair and the whole thing deflates. And then you have to cut it shorter. A lot shorter.

Yeah, that hurt really bad. Especially when all I want to do is have long beautiful hair like I used to have. I am very aware of that men like long haired women, which is part of why I hate the shorter hair. I don't have short hair like a man thankfully, but shorter than shoulder length is still way short for my liking...

I have thought of a wig, but will wait with that until I absolutely have to. For now I'm using extensions and toppik to get by.

And yeah norwegian men are judgemental and shallow. At least a lot of them. I'm sure most of you have heard the story about how my latest ex dumped me because of hair loss. Because he couldn't be with a girl who was bald, in his own words. And I actually thought we were soulmates, and he said that he wanted us to be together forever. I guess by forever he meant until my looks deteriorated, aka hair loss. Because when things got tough and I lost my hair, he didn't want to be by my side anymore.

Long extensions to take it back to waist length? Maybe that would do some mental good, to feel confident again.

Mine used to be waist length, but now it sits at my chest. It just becomes stringy now. What I miss most was the feeling of how it would brush all over me in the wind, and dance around when I turned my head. I just keep telling myself one day...either from finasteride or dutasteride, or a wig. One day I'll feel like that again. Powerful, masculine, on top of the world. Happy I guess.

No, I cut my extensions to the same length as my bio hair, just have them for thickness really. It's weird how hair has so much power of us, isn't it? And how bad losing it can make us feel, and feel like we're not even ourselves anymore. How bad is your hair loss?
