I'm curious Rage is/was your crown thinning at all, or did you just include those in the interest of thoroughness?

Rage, when you first began your treatment, what was your shedding like? I read somewhere that you did sometimes count the numbers of hairs lost, could you give an estimate? thanks

probably 100 hairs a day... gel bucket was filled with hair (but since i never cleaned them out, it just accumulated), and everytime i washed my hair, a good 5 would come out if i just put my hand through my hair. basically, its mostly stopped touch wood.

hope that helps.

thanks, it did. Im about a year older than you, and i have the same problem; started noticing diffuse thinning about a few months back...its not so much the shedding that bothers me as just the hair doesnt seem to be growing back as strong, if at all...Im thinking about going on the same regime as you, since we seem to be alike in our conditions ( im asian, 20, diffuse thinning, but I keep my hair long) and I seem to shed at the same rate you do...any advice you can give me?

If its definite that you will bald (eg for me, my dad is bald, my dad's dad is bald, my mums dad is bald), you should still see the doctor and do some blood tests just in case there's something else amiss.

I suppose the best advice is to stick on the treatments, and don't be scared of the side-effects - unless they are extreme.

minoxidil - gave me a rapid heart rate for the first few weeks of use (it lowers blood pressure and your body attempts to compensate), and gives me a few bouts of itching every now and then.

finasteride (proscar) - be wary that your sex drive, and performance will probably nosedive at month 2-4, but will most likely return.

T-Gel - bleaches your hair if you have dyed it, and smells kinda weird.

And if people criticize you about your treatment (i.e "you're not balding!"), console yourself, in that staying on the treatment will mean you probably never will for the next 20 years!!!

good luck mate

Hey Rage :),
Chill out mate! You took the statements of some users very seriously i guess. I once commented that i thought you did not have male pattern baldness because its very hard to tell from your baseline photos. But actually i heard some where, you need to lose atleast 25% hairs before you can visibly notice it. You are lucky you caught it early, and I think you will definitely main tain your hair for next 20 years. I wish I would had started this early. I waited 4 years before i started doing something. :(
Good luck mate..and keep posting your monthly pics :hairy:

Hey, I talked with my dermitologist, and she didnt seem too concerned about this...recommended that i take biotin. Didnt seem too concerned about dht, and said it wasnt a good indicator... Rage, which do you think helped more, the mino or the finasteride? She checked the scalp, did a hair pull, said everything seemed fine. She seemed to encourage taking rogaine(mino), but didnt recommend it; I think im still going to test for dht anyways.

She is correct, the DHT test will not tell you anything. What I meant by blood test was to check your thyroids and to ensure that it wasn't because of that. Well at least, thats what my Doctor said... he checked the levels of blood cells, the serum content and all that as well from the same test.. while its pretty certain that it is male pattern baldness - its better to know for certain.

Since you're starting, finasteride (proscar for the cheap, propecia for the rich) is probably your best bet. Though some people shed like crazy, and it doesn't work for them, the chances are low - and it will hopefully keep your hair as it is for a long time.. side effects are sometimes scary, but stick with it for at least a year.

I wish I just took finasteride only, but I started on min first because I was a bit concerned about altering my hormones, so I can't stop min because any hair that was grown with it would fall out. So try finasteride first, min later if its not working well.

good luck

but wait, if proscar is meant to inhibit dht production, then my current dht level doesnt indicate anything?

because its your hair cells' sensitivity to DHT thats the problem.. not the levels themselves. People with high levels of DHT do not necessary have male pattern baldness or vice versa.

ahh...I see. So there is no clear way to tell if you losing hair because of dht or not? male pattern baldness doesnt seem to run in my family; my father is completely bald but noone else in my family is. And my hair seems more in common with my mother than my father...

Your dad has male pattern baldness so why are you having a hard time accepting that you do?

If no one has male pattern baldness in your family except your dad, then how come your dad has it?

All it takes is one person in your family somewhere....anywhere for you to somehow get it. The sooner you except that you have male pattern baldness, the sonner you can do something about it.

Its not that I have a hard time accepting it, its just that Im not sure if the cause is male pattern baldness. My reasons are,

1. I dont have a receding hairline. I seem to have diffuse thinning.
2. Ive noticed this about three months ago, and I remember earlier in the year my hair was so thick, i have had to thin out my hair once every month or two up until June; August was the first time in my life when I got a haircut without thinning my hair.

So it really seems that Im shedding hair too quickly. Today was the first time in my life when I could actually see some of the scalp when I lift my hair up. So I guess im confused about my symptoms. Then again...my dad did go bald in 4 years. But he had a noticable receding hairline while i have diffuse thinning.

Anyways, I just had a blood test done, so ill see how that goes.

holy sh*t rage.. congrats man but really if i had your hair, f*** i'd be the happiest, worry-free bastard in the world.

by the way what the hell is diffuse thinning? i just found this site today and im 16 going on 17 soon.. damn it's fuckin sad that i have to even deal with thinking about this issue at this age but whatever better to fix this sh*t early than to get fucked over by it later right?

i've noticed that some of my hairs when they fall out, are so thin i can barely see them while others are thick and black. i've noticed spots in my head where hair is damn thin, well a lot less than there was before. family and friends tell me nothings wrong with me and that imma crazy b**ch imaginin bullshit up in my head. HAH! that'd make everyone on this site crazy bastards right? thats BULLSHIT!

my friend and i used to joke about our issues with hair but luckily for him he stopped worrying and regrew a lot. he used some ghetto *** rogaine sh*t called "nu-hair". i bought rogaine once and it said that it only regrows on the back of the head and causes hair to come out in unwanted areas. f*** i don't wanna become a hairy beast.. well not on my body.

i'll post up some pictures as soon as i can get my camera to work with this computer.

can you tell me exactly what you did and what products you used to help regrow/maintain your hair? seriously man you have to help me bro.

please help me guys!

- peace and hope your hair keeps thickening

Its on page 1 !

Proscar + Minoxidil + TGel is the combo... but since your 17, you might not want to take the proscar just yet - might have some undesirable effects.

Good luck mate, gets those pics up!

Month 7 (changed a bit):

Front
Right
Left
Top

Ok, things perhaps aren't going as good as I thought they were. The usual photos (front, back, left, right) threw up the same old same old.. until I decided to do the pics a different way.. finally, a true adversary, a true horror :( Hopefully it was due to a shed.. i have no idea if it was always like that. And its an odd pattern indeed.

I've actually added nizoral every 3rd day to the regiment because of irritation due to the spring season.

Crown and vertex is dying, that finasteride goodness better kick in soon *fingers crossed*
