Why do proteasome inhibitors work so incredibly well for hair regrowth in male pattern baldness cases. And what does this tell us about the mechanisms of male pattern baldness?

Interesting discussion, revisiting the fundamental question is a good idea. I would like to throw in some words from Cotsarelis about Estrogen and its impact on hair growth, which I do NOT think have been discussed sufficiently on forums:

Studies and case reports of transgender operations where men become women and receive high doses of estrogen show that a scalp that was almost completely bald can have, after castration and high estrogen supplementation, a tremendous amount of hair growth.
The overall feeling is that the follicles can be thought of as being in three states. Either they’re terminal, and they’re large, or they’re miniaturized, and they’re small, and the hair they’re creating is microscopic, or they’re in between, called indeterminate. It’s thought that follicles reach a point where they’re producing a hair so small that at that point the chance of reversing that follicle is small. There seems to be a point of no return with respect to androgen removal; even if you castrate someone who’s bald he won’t regrow all his hair. If you give him estrogen, too, he might.

Regrowing hair in bald areas is the holy grail of hair loss -- much discussion is fully focused on the effect of DHT and what happens downstream of DHT, but if really estrogen grows hair then understanding the effect of estrogen is also crucial.

I think generally this interview is a good background for everyone

Given this, did anyone or any study ever try topical estrogen application?

Pour lady juice on our heads to grow hair.... makes sense.

Was told today that I'm bald because I don't take care of myself. So many misconceptions about baldness..... we know some of the mechanisms involved but not the reason.

Does it ever surprise you how fvcking stupid people are in regards to causes of hair loss? The most idiotic excuse is because of wearing hats.... my god.

I have to admit, that was amusing to read. This desease is hell, make it go away. Proof that there is no God, hairloss still exists, enough said.

I've heard that I lost my hair because I didn't wash it enough and let a fungal growth spread across my scalp. That was stupid.

People still seem to think that stress somehow plays a role in male pattern baldness and also quickly assume that current hair loss treatments (minoxidil/rogaine) can miraculously turn any bald man hairy overnight regardless of how aggressive their condition is.

An Indian dude told me once that my baldness was either a sign of malnutrition or spiritual corruption. -_-

It's almost like people just sit around and dream of ways to implicate bald men and slander us by trying to pass off their own hate filled prejudice as pseudo science when all they are being are elitist pricks. Just trying to keep the stigma alive I guess. Well F em. It's bad enough when people are stupid but the combination of being stupid and hostile is getting to the point where I can't take it anymore. I seriously fear that the next time something happens, I will snap and blackout and kill someone.

Next time it happens just EDUCATE them on the real reasons. It is the only way to dispel the myths and old wives tales.

^I did. I told him male pattern baldness is a genetically inherited trait that affects the base of the hair follicles making them over-sensitive to the bi-product of testosterone (DHT), causing the body to not recognize these follices thus killing them with each growth cycle. You know what he said to that?

"Believe what you want" then walked away. I can't help anyone who chooses to remain ignorant just so that they can hate a whole demographic of people.

In that case, you did all that you could. Some people just rather believe in hocus pocus than actual evidence.

Why would they? The issue is a lack of awareness. No one is taught in school biology lessons what causes male pattern baldness, so some people would rather formulate and believe their own (absurd) ideas.

It's obvious, people like to feel better about themselves. If they see someone bald, they feel they are superior and if that goes away, they won't have that sense of superiority.

It's like when you see a blind guy, or someone without a limb, you feel better about yourself. It's just the way it is, I admit that I do feel better when I see a short guy. So I want there to be more short guys, it's boosts my brownie points just a bit.

Yes, but this does not explain the persistence of crackpot theories related to the underlying pathology.

It is also silly to suggest no one wants to cure blindness to maintain our sense of superiority.

I never educate or explain things to anyone. If they care or want to know they can google it and figure it out for themselves. If they are too lazy or dont then they clearly dont care. Fixing ignorance is not a good use of my time or my job. So if someone told someone male pattern baldness is from wearing a hat, too much masturbation ect. I would just not say anything and ignore it.

I appreciate Bushbush's optimistic perspective, but to misquote a biblical precept, trying to sway the abysmally ignorant is a bit like casting your pearls to swine.

I would really appreciate if this thread does not get sidetracked into a discussion of "common misconceptions". The latter is interesting but not the topic of this extremely important thread. what I mentioned on estrogen was a quote from costarelis...
I also cited studies on the DHT <---> IGF channel.

Lol extreme importance, nothing will come out of this thread. Everything here has been discussed to death before. What we need is a geany that grants wishes.

A Jeanie would be fantastic.:) I am discouraged myself, but nevertheless still tend to lean (perhaps cling) to an attitude geared toward education. If I/we can unravel the mystery any or demystify the phenomenon in our heads some naturally promotes better understanding to which newer ideas (solutions) can potentially spring from. It's a big dream to fulfill with our minds and eyes wide open.
