well you can get rid of anything, if you put it like that...
Not really. You can't get rid of grammar and punctuation without a total loss of functionality in a European writing system. You could still have a perfectly valid writing system with hiragana alone and some minor adjustments.
The reasons, that speak against it are in the cluster of personal preference, culture, national identity, aesthetics etc. Kanji are very much interwoven with Japan's history, art, national identity etc. But these valid considerations come from a completely different realm than just functionality.

well, yes... so you better not get rid of it...
people are pretty much proud of their writing system, both the kanji and hiragana...

you could try writing everything in hiragana with the same punctuation that european languages use, it is a bit impractical though, because it is way longer (not to mention a lot of abbreviations and a lot of words that are just kanji to get the meaning across) and more difficult to understand, but yes, you could...
you could also omit using capital letters and im quite sure people wouldnt want that...

dont loose your hair over it^^
