Stop with the non-sequiturs: Nobody said that heavy lifting is the only means of getting fit. It is merely one of the most efficient in terms of results versus time and money put in.

With that said, don't expect great results from walking instead of driving. If driving to work takes 10 minutes and walking takes 45 minutes, you're likely better off using those 35 minutes for something requiring more exertion.

You're the one who always glorifies going to the gym. I am saying an active lifestyle doesn't imply going to the gym. And cardio is important for your health, don't just rely on lifting heavy things in short duration. Cardio takes time.

That's just your misconception and misunderstanding because you're simplifying things. I have mentioned several times that people should do what works for them and I myself do some pilates, yoga, and massage therapy. You might try those, or swimming, martial arts, or soccer, among other examples.

Most of what people call "cardio" is of very little value. The reason a lot of people prefer it is simply that it's easier. It's really easy to get on the elliptical trainer or go outside and jog for an hour, burn 700-1,100 calories and average a heart rate of ~130 while listening to .mp3s. That's much easier than lifting weights. I do it sometimes. It's really easy. But don't expect significant results. High-intensity interval training on the other hand ...where your heart rate crosses above 160, 170, or 180 beats per minute ... is tremendously impactful.

And I regularly go for 30-60 minute walks. But I do it to relax and collect my thoughts. It doesn't help with fitness.

Intensity is extremely important. Don't expect great results from low-intensity activities like golf, walking, chess, billiards, or softball.

Are you ripped David?

I would discuss my fitness with you but you don't seem to be engaging in conversation in good faith so I won't.

I have discussed it with several other forum members.

Maybe my somewhat limited English makes me sound harsh but that's not my intention. I just want to know where you stand regarding your fitness level because you seem passionate. And I enjoy having conversations with people with different ideas, I know I'm not right about everything.

OK I misunderstood then. I'm sorry.

I'm working on getting ripped. I've lost ~50 lbs (one maximum weight suitcase) since April 2015, which is when I was at the worst shape of my life. I probably need to lose another ~15 lbs. I'm more concerned with losing body fat than with gaining muscle, for the time being.

During the period 2011-2015, I obsessively tried to lose weight via cardio. I weight trained maybe 1 day a week, and did cardio for 3,4,5 hours a week. With that approach I lost no weight, and developed two herniated disks among other problems. I finally did some research and realized that most of the information I learned during the period 2001-2003 had fallen out of favour, including the advocacy of moderate-intensity cardio.

Throughout 2015 I reduced my consumption of bread and sugar, ate more fats, started getting massages, did more weight lifting, less cardio, and started seeing a personal trainer. My progress reached a plateau in January-April 2016 so I've added in intermittent fasting to lower my insulin levels.

In July 2015 my testosterone was at 19.8 and 504, and my SHBG was at 20. In June 2016, testosterone rose to 27 and 630, and SHBG to 24. My back feels better, probably more due to pilates than to weight training.

I believe that diet is more important than exercise. In the health and fitness section you can find my science of intermittent fasting thread where I discuss these issues in greater detail.

Congratulations on the weight loss. Some people struggle with much less. Why do you think you herniated two disks from cardio? I don't understand how. I would have thought lifting heavy things will herniate disks. A strong core is the important thing to have when dealing with back pain.

Yes, most people are fat from simple sugar, like in soda and white bread. I use erythritol to sweeten my tea, it has zero calories and tastes like sugar and it's not artificial. And I don't eat white bread because I'm still hungry shortly after. Potatoes are great though if they're boiled or baked and not fried.

Being overweight, sleeping in low-quality beds due to poverty, and having a desk job for a long time probably caused the hernias. My obesity would have been cured years earlier if I had lifted weights earlier rather than done cardio. When you burn calories with moderate intensity cardio, you lose a little weight but your body responds by increasing hunger and decreasing rest matabolism. It has a lot of benefits, but decreasing adipose fat is not among them.

As an example, if you take sedentary people and train them to run a marathon, they won't lose weight:

Nah can't grow any facial hair whatsoever. Also have no body hair. Long line of family history of being unable to grow beards but having great hair on the head. Somewhere probably from generations down I somehow inherited baldness at a young age. Just my luck lol. And nah not ready to date with this right now. Gotta accept myself before I let someone else in my life. And I got plenty of time so not too worried.

Dang.
Then you have to find your style. Framing your face with accessories etc.
