Reducing Avodart to a Lower doss
Upto Feb 25th I had been taking Propecia 6 days per week, plus Regaine regular strength morning and evening. Results were very positive in that although hair in temples and frontal areas never returned to that of my youth (I'm now 36years old), they did not deteriorate and the top of my scalp more or less returned to it's original condition. However, to try and improve my temples and frontal area (I have a small bump on my forehead, so I like to have a fringe) I began taking Avodart as follows:
Feb 25th 2006 – Begin taking 0.5mg Avodart.
1st March 2006 – Stop using Regaine Regular and Propecia.
Beginning of April 2006 – Start using Regaine Extra Strength having noticed that I can brush lots of hair into the sink. Apparently, it takes 90 days for the Avodart to reach maximum levels in the body. Maybe I shouldn't have stopped taking Propecia so suddenly?
June 25th 2006. – I have been taking Avodart 0.5mg per day for nearly 4.5 months. Thinning on top of scalp definitely noticeable under light bulb, but seems to have improved temples and frontal areas (or is it just that they look better when compared to the top of the scalp??)
Stopped taking Avodart and began taking Propecia again. Hair returned to normal.
Took Avodart three times per week with a daily Propecia from the middle of Sep 2006 until the 23rd Nov 2006, to help maintain what I perceived as an improvement in growth around the temple and frontal areas. Hair maintained its health and thickness this time. Can't swear to significant improvement in frontal and temple areas though.
From end of Nov 2006 to second week in February 2007 took Propecia and Regaine Regular as prescribed.
Second Week in February 2007 to 19th June 2007 (4 months) stopped taking all hair loss products apart from Regaine Regular Strength. Apart from around the temples and right at the front of the scalp, no noticeable difference in hair loss. Even at the front and temples it was not marked, just a slight deterioration.
19th June 2007 – Began taking 2 Avodart per day, plus 1 Propecia, in addition to normal Regaine Regular strength treatment. I feel that Avodart helps re-grow the hair around the temples and frontal area.
9th Sep 2007 – Took 2x0.5mg Avodart + Propecia per day from the 19th June to 24th July, plus Regaine Regular, then just took Propecia during my stay abroad (from 25th July to 6th August). From 6th August to 9th Sep took 1 Avodart 0.5mg and 1 Propecia plus Regaine Regular. In terms of hair pattern, I have noticed an increase in the amount of hair that I shed into the sink and that I am beginning to thin a little just back and very slightly in from the temple area. I think that I have also thinned a little on top but not as much as last year when I took just Avodart on its own. The hair is also becoming noticeably dry and 'strawlike'.
Having read Andrea's post I think that I am going to stop taking Avodart for about a month and remain on Propecia + Regaine regular. Will then look at taking just one or two Avodart capsules per week.
All in all, my little study in not particularly scientific and probably too emotionally driven, but as other people have mentioned, Avodart seems to cause shedding and poor quality hair in the initial stages. Trouble is, I haven't seen many posts to convince me that it's worth waiting 12 months to see if it does work in the end!
