i don't actually see the 80's privatisation of BA as a bad thing but i would support it's renationalisation if we weren't in so much debt, but from the looks of it they will be as dead as a dodo in less than a decade anyway
Getting BA off the government books was a wise decision. The airline industry is a train wreck in extremely slow motion.

And after Portugal, Spain. The UK can skirt disaster if the next Govt. convinces markets that debt will be brought under control; appetite for US debt will probably strengthen during the uncertainty...
Once the bailouts start, you can't stop them! I'll wager a guess that there will be bailouts for things that we, at this moment, don't even realize are toxic yet. There were some LBO consolidations in the US airline industry that I'm curious about. They secured their financing at the height of the bubble times... I'd wager a guess that bankruptcy looms, but the airlines in question are "too big to fail".

I think Benron Bernanke is going to bail out everything. He and his "primary dealers" who I believe are manipulating equity markets can always stage a stock market fright and scare people into buying USTs.

longer term looks troubling for both of us.
Very troubling indeed. But at that point I'll be starting a fight club... Operation Chaos, anyone?

I just hope that this doesn't all end up precipitating a big war somewhere.

All newspapers are basically wank.

I'm going to spoil my vote, that way people can't accuse me of apathy in not going to the polling station.

Here's a Coldcut tune from around the 2002 election, check it out...amazing how little has changed even though this was 8 years ago

I wouldn't believe any claims about welfare fraud until the relevant government department confirm it.

All I see is a photos of some people along with stories that may or may not be concocted.

These stories also made it onto the evening news and have been debated in numerous current affairs programmes.

Like I said I would take anything printed in hysterical newspapers regarding welfare fraud with a big chunk of salt until I had better reason to believe they were true.

There's pretty good reason to doubt it- how did the paper get hold of their families details? just a random phone call and the family happily agreed to have their stories about sitting pretty on welfare splashed all over the papers knowing the negative attention it would attract and furthermore, they did it without asking for any money for the article? Or did the families just decide to ring the paper up one day and give them a story because.....?

These dole scum exposes are always are the cream of the crop when it comes to manufacturing outrage and in this instance the tabloid media get to kill 2 birds with one stone- you get the immigrant hate story with the dole bludger hate story. That's good value. And f all of the readers even ask if theres any truth to the story, they're too busy foaming at the mouth.

.

These stories are definatley true, I dont know why you doubt whats printed in a top selling national paper. Obviously the tone of the article is cause outrage but they cant print something that is'nt fact. The mail is'nt even considered a red top paper over here and its easy for them to check what these people are able to claim and add up the totals. The info is available to anyone.
BTW this is'nt a welfare fraud story what these people are claiming is the official allowance for their circumstances.

The way it works is easy:
Someone finds out what they're claiming by word of mouth ect, they call the paper with the story, and recieve a payment if they can provide sufficient evidence (ie details) to convince the press that its true. The paper then calls the family offering them a chance to give their side of the story and probably offers a few of a few £1000. Obviously its probably not to hard for a smooth talking journalist to gain the trust of a bunch of low class dimwits.

If the press can expose stories such as the government fraudently claiming expenses, and falsifying evidence in the Iraq inquiring I think that they can easily expose cases such as these.

SAF i would like to sing you a little song about the daily mail :innocent:
[youtube:1y2truoe]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eBT6OSr1TI[/youtube:1y2truoe]

on a serious note the cases you put forward seem to be exploitation of big loopholes
though the news of the world story
"HOOKED up to the set is a £180 NINTENDO Wii console complete with extra games costing £40 each."
like having a wiii is a massive luxury

the first story 150k of that annual 166k goes to the house rent and the owner doesn't (or shouldn't) see a penny of that, sounds like a benefit loophole
maybe council housing for people on long term benefits

the second story well idk how much it would cost to support 8 kids but i can't imagine much change from 42k
what i also noticed is that they made a big headline about him driving a mercedes but they don't elaborate on that at all, idk what model or year it is so my hunch is that he's driving a car like this

So you think its ok that money from the taxpayer that could be being spent on Hospital drugs, or equipping our troops or giving struggling pensioners (who've paid into the system their whole lives)a extra few quid is being spent to entertain the kids of scroungers with the latest hi tech gadgets. In otherwords You think a Nintendo Wii is a household neccessity?

It is a loophole but how many houses are there in your neighbourhood that can comfortably sleep a family of 8?

Again totally missing the point which is wether or not it costs £42,000 to keep a family of 8 kids for a year. Why should the burden be left to people who have their own families and go to work everyday to provide for this family who cant be bothered to responsibility for themselves.
Ps I saw a pic of the Mercedes in question and it was a black estate car version worth about £5000 according to the paper. But nevertheless no matter what the make or model it was paid for by other peoples taxes.

What else do you think they should get? Maybe an annual holiday to Tenerife aswell? Maybe every benifit claimaint should get a free Plasma tv after 10 yrs as an added bonus? After all thats hardly a Luxury these days, or is it?

I'd want to see that evidence before I rushed to any verdicts.

Here's a classic example of media distortion of a welfare related story here a while back, if you're bored enough to watch-

Theres no disputing wether or not these people are actually living on benifits they have all been interviewed by countless different newspapers and news shows. They're real families not actors, I know it may seem hard for you to believe this madness but we British see examples of this every day.

Slarti- you still ordering your Avodart from Merlonipharma?
Hey aussie, I've been cheating on GSK with Cipla for more than 6 months now. Exchange rate changes pushed 90 Avodart to over £130 (up from about £90), and with Duprost coming in at less than half that I couldn't justify spending the extra.

Are you on Avo/dutasteride these days?

damn...the sweet nectar that is GSK avodart is hard on the wallet

I'm still on dr reddys dutasteride, though I'm thinking of kicking the habit this year, even though I know its keeping whats left of the pelt.

Too much paranoia about long term what-ifs....thinking about saw palmetto perhaps, need to do some more reading.

Don't do it Aussieavodart, you can kiss that pelt goodbye if you do!

I am on Veltride (Dutasteride) but I am a bit worried as they are tablets and not soft gel capsules!
