damn mac you can sing and play. and f*****g hell rudiger that shits pretty complex!

@Rudiger what music genres do you like? can you play djent or math rock super technical type stuff? (sorry, idk if what you posted is considered technical lol).

btw i never mentioned it but a while back you said melancholia was one of your favorite movies ever, ya got good taste. it was f*****g great. terrifying as all hell but thats what made it so impactful for me. i related so much to claire in the 2nd half, she represented anxiety i think. most people only focus on the other girl representing depression. that moment when she looked at the planet with the metal thing and saw it was coming closer. HOLY MOTHER OF f***. talk about absolutely f*****g horrifying. that moment was so anxiety inducing. i'm obsessed with apocalyptic stuff and thats one of the best "apocalypse" type situations i've seen

you might like the movie "seeking a friend for the end of the world". similar in being about exclusively the emotional impact of an apocalypse. also some extremely scary scenes.

Nice thread...

Ya, I also think Melancholia is one of the best movies ever made.

I do a lot of astronomy and study of space rocks.

I know of that film, I might watch.

Melancholia wonderfully captures the catatonic state of your world ending, and unlike certain aggressive forms of depression that cause up's and down's, bi-polar, being manic, etc. this film goes more for a passivity to all things, ending or not. I think nearly every person has had this feeling, albeit briefly, but if you've ever felt like this for a prolonged period, or knew someone who has (I've had both) then this film perfectly captures it.

I don't like any particular "genres" but nah probably not djent or math rock really, I'm sure I could play it. Yeah both those songs would be considered technical, both have techniques throughout which aren't exactly common (eg finger picking with your ring and pinky finger while also plucking the top strings with a pick).

You might like Take Shelter, it also deals with this personal mental delusion affecting reality around us, as this is the "reality" people with mental illness go through. It actually came out around the same time as Melancholia.

It's also quite striking visually but in a completely different way to Melancholia. There are still plenty of grandeur moments that I think you'd appreciate.

Just an interesting side note as to how a simple image can stylistically create an entire theme, Melancholia is almost certainly based off "Ophelia" a painting by Millais:

ophelia_hogsmil_kingston.jpg

But ironically while von Trier tone down the use of colour for that one image of the bridge in the river, he used the same theme's of colour throughout the rest of the film

honestly i've been wanting to learn an instrument but i feel its pointless doing it while ugly. but mac and rudi, you guys are right in that my intentions weren't geniune. i just love the ego fuel of being an admired musical virtuouso. i guess REALLY i don't want to play

also @Rudiger goes without saying but the song "prelude" on melancholia was f*****g amazing. perfectly captured the atmosphere of the movie. i love listening to it at night and deeply imagining the end of the world lol

"Prelude" is more like a section of a piece (the beginning) so there's a lot of "preludes" out there! This was the prelude to Tristan und Isolde.

If that peaks an interest in classical music then delve deeper, I know quite a few people who love all sorts of classical music now off of 1 piece in a film. Personally I like this piece in the film but I've never hugely got into Wagner and wouldn't exactly stick it on.

I still get that ego fuel as you describe it, it impresses people, I feel important. However this feeling gets old quick, and it won't carry you through moving up and up in difficulty. Both songs I posted were absolute hell and for the most part not fun at all to learn, gradually getting results was worth it though, I wouldn't do it just for people's attention.

I have a lot of talents and hobbies but not practicing many lately due to current hair loss obsession.

painting
drawing
sketchup pro--this I am doing a lot of lately to try and master the program.
designing stuff (mostly for work)
creating stuff (mostly for work)
I like to fix broken things. (rewire lamps for example, refinish furniture)
guitar--but I have lost desire--not good but used to be relaxing.
horseback riding--not convenient anymore :(
pilates
cardio workouts
strength training (out of this hobby have to get back into it)
writing and researching the stuff I write about.
Tennis--but I am like 'blah' about tennis, don't love it. I like the outfits though.
Salsa--I am a pretty decent dancer I studied latin ballroom many years ago..it sticks with you.

Ya... I think Melancholia is a much better movie (as its much better than most movies...) but Take Shelter is also very good. Michael Shannon is outstanding in the lead and there are a lot of other really good performances. It's like Melancholia in that it's very realistic, and also deals with mental illness. In a sense the ending is similar too (wont say any more about that).

Talking about mental illness and film, I'll have to throw in a plug for Ordinary People, one of the best movies dealing with depression ever made.

Yep. I saw in the other thread you were talking about the films of the 70s (actually OP is 1980), I totally agree about that. You also mentioned Robert Evans, the producer... there's a great documentary about him called 'The Kid Stays in the Picture', would recommend to anyone interested. I wouldnt have known much or anything about him without seeing it.

Peggy Lipton has what named "interesting" beauty, something unusual with her eyes, you barely will see a beautiful person with eyes like these. Natural beauty and beyond /10 scale.

Drawing and painting mostly but lately my passion project has been making Star Wars Battlefront 2 (Pandemic) tribute maps through a game called Disney Infinity 3.0. The game is directed at kids but idc because it is sooo much less restricted than EASWBF2015.... in fact my disgust with what dice did with the franchise was the catalyst for GALACTICFRONT (my version). I currently have made over thirty two maps, including new locales not in the original games. On top of all that, i broadcast gameplay on twitch... alway5offline is my address if you want to see my work ( dont forget to follow me)...Dante.

Melancholia was a great freakin movie
Any other recommendations?

Wolf of Wall Street
The City of Life and Death
Amour

Might be the best movies I've seen in the past decade.

But I'm now watching Last Chance U on Netflix. It's not amazing, but it's good enough.

3d max is like my holy grail but its too damn expensive. also you have to run windows on Mac and I am like 'ehhh' about doing that.....they have a 30 day free trial but I would need like 6 months free trial to get basics probably lol.
