You growing up in the South of the US is an even more biased example because that is obviously an environment where it pays of to be a rightwinger for obvious reasons.

Just because you scoff at the analogy doesn't mean it isn't applicable. Your hangup was seemingly over biology. Lasik doesn't change the biology of bad sight, it just is surgery that changes the body (in this case the eye). It won't be the same eye as a person whose naturally born with perfect vision, but it still accomplishes much the same thing. Transitioning goes a step further in altering the endocrine system to one consistent with a women's and thus secondary sex characteristics then naturally develop constant with that sex. Identical to their every biology? No. But it's hardly the same thing as a male either
