Would You Put 15 Yr Old On Dutasteride?

He's been consulted the whole way through. I told him about YouTubers who have popular channels embracing teen baldness and giving advice on confidence etc. I asked him if he wanted to shave and embrace - NO.

So, we research and do all we can - YES.

He travelled, none of us knowing Dutasteride would be the result.

We informed him of the reduction in his fertility. He chose hair over kids. I pointed out he was too young to know the implications of that decision. I arranged for him to store semen, not an easy thing for a 15 year old, but he was prepared to do it. Was booked in for the following morning, that's when we took pause. Why was he taking something that would reduced his semen 30%, usually restored after off the drug, but not guaranteed? What else could it be doing to him?

He was consulted about really considering the necessity to take a hefty medication when he's not sick per se. All medications come with risks. He's very young, do you think being on a hefty medication is worth any long term consequences - No!

Is hair worth this? No. He was on the fence moments, but quickly came down on the cautious side. His self-worth is not wrapped up in what sprouts from his head. He's lived his whole life with a lovely NW7 Dad.

We're in the process of seeking a second opinion from someone recommended via this forum. Helping him is not abandoned. He deserves a second opinion.
Look... I'm gonna be frank with you.. dutasteride in this case is a terrible idea. Aside from the fact that he's 15..

His hair loss is pretty extensive already and dutasteride offers no/limited regrowth. Furthermore, it's not an end all be all solution. It's a powerful drug for sure but it doesn't stop balding, it just delays it, depending on the individual's responsiveness and hair loss rate.

If your son looks like this at 15 he's gonna be bald in 3-5 years dutasteride or not.

You don't wanna give him development problems and ed on top of that.

I'd say look into hair systems and new upcoming technologies like Riken's hair multiplication. He's 15 so there's a good chance sth good will be out when he's in his 20s.

Or he can shave it if he wants. A shaved head is not the best sight in the world but at least it looks uniform and clean. Better than a butchered & withered hairline.

Seriously with such an aggressive case it's really not worth the hussle.

@NzinOz His hairloss looks a bit atypical to me with the sides of his hair looking like they have thinned out extensivrly. Has he taken thyroid function tests or had a scalp biopsy? You should try and rule out all other possibilities first.

His father's sides are thin per sq cm too, and he himself has never had a dense head of hair. Yes he's had thyroid function tests, along with multiple other bloods. No problems surfaced.

We've had a consultant, hair loss specialist and two GPs all label it as MBP (Androgenetic Alopecia).

He's been on a bucket load of supplements for three weeks in an effort to protect what he has, and 3 hourly protein. Upon inspection tonight I'd say there is some hair regrowth happening. It may be wishful thinking, but both his father and I think perhaps?

His hair looks so different now, a close crop on top and #3 on sides has made it look more full. It's hard to take a good look without making him self-concious about it. At the moment he's not embarrassed by his reduced crop, long may it last. The end may not be nigh just yet.

At 25 he’ll probably have the possibility to transplant as much hair on his scalp as he would like. Hopefully hair cloning is coming soon. At least give him some hope in that way.

Yeah, OP should save up for Shiseido or Tsuji in order to save his remaining youth later.

Before this ever started happening I'd shown him micro pigmentation videos. So he was fore-warned that there are cosmetic ways of making yourself fit in more. He has always rejected our promptings that the curse would strike at some stage, his fine sparce hair screamed it from childhood. He's got a 'bugger, you were right' attitude now and is by no means losing the plot over this.

He'll grow up in an age of developments. I agree, one day things could change for him.

honestly i think you should give minoxidil a try ! I think he might respond well at his age . then start fina which is safer than duta
You can never predict how he will react to 5 ar inhibitor . when i first started it at 20 my E2 level clearly skyrocketed . If i would have been 15 that would have stopped my growth dead in track !

I've sought a second opinion from a hairloss expert someone on here recommended. He said it was not appropriate to give a 15 year old dutasteride or finasteride, no matter how physically developed he is. He's reviewing photos & bloods we've had done to date and considering appropriate options.

the hormonal profile of your son is perfeclty normal!
this is just is DNA which caused his hair thinning . you can trick it by taking either finasteride or dutasteride ( which will change his hormonal profile ) . Or you can try minoxidil , which in some case create good result

@NzinOz Just some words of encouragement - i too went through the same thing seeing my little brother start to lose his hair at 14 no one could notice except from me at first and it tear me up inside more so than my own hair loss ever did. He started balding a whole 4 years earlier than me and whilst he was still in school, the amount of emotional stress and crippling depression losing my hair put on me i couldn't imagine how it would affect him.

Anyhow as he turned 15 i took matter in my own hands, i knew he was far to young to take antiandrogens but i got advice and minoxidil was a safe option. At 15 he started applying minoxidil foam once a day (i believe 16 is the recommended minimum age) he is now approaching 17 and he has managed to keep his hair. At this rate it looks like he will make it through his school years with hair and then if he so chooses he can consider something like finasteride at 18.

So my suggestion is get him to begin minoxidil 5% once or twice a day. Here are some photos of my brothers hair at 15 and then another at 17. You can see the difference minoxidil made for him. So don't lose hope! Also another important thing to consider is whether your son actually minds losing his hair as hairloss affects people differently and in his case he may not care.

Edit - I forgot to add - me and my parents discussed this in length with my little brother at the time and we all agreed this was the right step to take.

Amazing man.

My own younger brother is also balding even worse than myself. His started at like 16 and is now Norwood 3.5 at 18. I've twice tried telling him to look in to minoxidil. For whatever reason he hasn't done anything with it, despite being very affected by his hair loss.. it's brutal to watch.

RCH-01. Exciting f*****g Stuff it is M8!!!. We are currently waiting for phase II trial results from Shiseido which should be posted by end of Q2 of Japanese fiscal year, so sometime before end of September. As long as the results are favorable, then it has been planned to go market immediately after, so potentially before end of this year. The phase I safety trial already proved stabilization after 5 years and some regrowth, I think the average was like 8% increase in hair count so I do not see how the phase II could not at least produce the same which should be enough to bring it to market in Japan.

My norwood is like a 1.5 thanks entirely to starting finasteride at 19. It stopped it dead. I wear my hair kinda long with bangs that cover my forehead and no one would ever think i had any issues with male pattern baldness but I am the only adult male on both sides of fam with full head. Drug is a miracle worker for some of us (knock on wood).

Mate you gotta stop spreading false hope like this. RCH-01 has ZERO chance of being available this year. Even if they take advantage of those Japanese laws it's only gonna be for people who are actually living in Japan .

Not necessarily. I'm too lazy to explain again, but there is enough evidence that Shiseido if they want, coul offer this to foreigners as soon as it launched.

If you did not know, there is a stem cell theraphy for Alzheimer's under these new laws in Japan. They offer it for foreign patients too, foreign patients from all over the world.

Story is pretty much the same as me but I had trichotillomania b4 at 7 till 12
Hook up on minoxidil + Fina as soon as possible.
Take also Retinoid cream + Topical Calcitriol + Stemoxydib + Dermarolling and Castor Oil.
This will help too
I would avoid Duta for now since he is just 15.

In case this fail and you have some money use Setipiprant + CB-01.
Hair transplantation can also be a solution.

@michel sapin

go ahead and dislike this post.

Your post that recommended finasteride/dutasteride to a 15 year old who's developing D**K needs all the DHT it can get to grow- deserves a million dislikes

i repeat:

Talk only when u have something intelligent to say here

As many others have said in this thread, dutasteride at 15 is really not recommended. I can't believe the doctor was so willing to prescribe it to a mere 15 years old kid. And besides... His hair loss seems to be too aggressive considering his age... The risk is not worth it but if he has already started taking it, I doubt he will want to stop now.

Finasteride is a better choice as it still leaves some dht in the system and only blocks one type 5a-reductase, I would consider asking your son to switch to finasteride if he is hell bent on taking some kind of anti-androgen, although he shouldn't be taking any at his age. Good luck.

This post is as 'intelligent' as michel sapin 's . Are u implying that 'some' dht left is sufficient for a 15 year old to reach his genetically-determined max potential?

No, Mr "intelligent", I clearly said at the end there that it would be preferable if he wasn't taking any anti-androgens, how "intelligent" of you not to notice. Not to mention, you're very "intelligent" to not notice that I was writing that post from the perspective of the kid not wanting to quit his dutasteride, and we all know finasteride is the lesser evil of the two so if he was going to take any kind of AA, I would prefer if he was on finasteride.

Get off your high horse and contribute something useful to this thread or don't contribute at all, Mr "intelligent"

thats not what u said- read ur own post (post 163).

why cherry-pick and omit the 2nd part of ur post?

no mattter how u twist it, u're still advocating AAs can be used for his son- when he should not be taking ANY at all for his age.

U being stupid has got nothing to do with me being intelligent
