This Whole Thing Reminds Me Of Racism And Discrimination

This is very interesting. Many people would probably think Ireland as a racist country, probably because our history, homogeneity, and Catholicism.

Yet racially motivated crimes or non-subtle discrimination is extremely rare here, stories like those don't seem to happen much at all.

There are certainly those who are quietly racist (especially older people), but even amongst poor "white trash" communities racism is stigmatized to the point that open racism is extremely rare.

Knacker (gypsies, travelers) are, without a doubt, discriminated against. But there is a lot of good reasons for that.

The stories I mentioned don't "happen" that much in Ohio either. I know about them mostly from conversation, not from the media.

I never thought of Ireland as racist place..I just know you guys to have the religious terrorism history in the 70s and 80's with Irish republic etc...I don't know the details I just remember in 80s a lot of terrorism and the song "Bloody Sunday'.

It wasn't actually fueled by religion. It was primarily political and nationalistic, although it could also be split into protestant and catholic, this was not part of the reason it occurred. Irish nationalist wanted northern Ireland to leave the UK and become part of the republic of Ireland and used guerrilla warfare (essentially terrorism) to try and achieve this goal. Unionists in NI did not want this.

The summary here gives a good outline.

Sorry, but you know about these events from conversation?
I'm assuming you're smart enough to factor in the "Chinese whispers" effect.

If it wasn't reliable I wouldn't include it in my post.

I agree.

If i tell you guys where I grew up it was normal if a black person came into my neighborhood--i mean just walk a few blocks this way or that way they would be jumped and have the living sh*t beaten out of them...and i dont mean slapped around I mean kicked in face and head pounded on pavement. A lot of people died this way. Its not chinese whispers because you can look it up and find evidence that supports it.

I think everyone discriminates against gypsies...even white blue eyed ones--they are 'generally' pretty awful people. They are thieve and scammers. LOL i mean I even can tell a fucked up story about The Gypsy Kings...but its not about myself and I dont want to share it but lets just say they may be famous and wealthy--but they are still Gypsies. I mean it turned out okay but lets just say I personally would not ever let myself be alone with any of them.

Oh I agree the vast majority of them are terrible. Even forgetting all their crimes the absolute mess they leave behind them is disgraceful. Truth is you have to try and treat people individually (when possible, security reasons will trump this). Otherwise it makes it hard for them to ever change.

But surely this is completely a thing of the past? I can't imagine a lone black person getting beat up for being in a white neighborhood not making national news, to the point that even I'd hear about it?

Being called ******** or Osama, or having your shop window broken doesn't compare to getting the sh*t kicked out of you because of the color of your skin. This sort of racism, I would have thought, was largely dead in the US.

Haha I love these also.

I thought you were American.

What I've found in some workplaces is that Americans tend to stick together. It's not necessarily bigotry, it's more of a culture match thing. They speak the same way, have the same values, same assumptions, et cetera.

No I'm not American.

I'm mixed and have been in the UK for a while. I sound very authentic English according to most local people but some local people would start saying how I sound weird once I told them where I'm actually from. Some would say all my people sound weird in a certain way. Some would not even look me into the eyes even though I've made efforts to talk to them and be nice to them. Until one day they needed help from me. It's almost disgusting.

It's certainly not cultural differences. Like some white people would talk about just about the most boring things like how they did their laundry on Saturday to their peers but in a room full of minority people they'd be silent as fuk. Almost like they are socially awkward or something.

When I read stuff like this happening in other countries, I feel proud of America and Oklahoma. Never experienced anything remotely similar. When I was in college, numerous white people would invite me to their homes for thanksgiving and Christmas. I had to turn down several of them down. Pretty much all of them were republicans. Many of them voted for Trump.

No, we have a lot of racism still. It's not as segregated as years ago and a lot of those neighborhood changed. NOW you have white poeple moving into minority neighborhoods which is kind of funny and ironic and a little sad as they are pushed further and further out from where they have work etc.

You want to find a racist? tell a person in a white neighborhood the house next door is sold to black person. LOL the mask comes right off.

this happened in this year. This is normal of people i knew growing up.

Everyone has a token black or brown friend who is 'different' from rest and reassures them they are not racist and its the other cultures that are fucked up.

It makes me sad that Indian Emigrants are suffering from racism.

This people do not represent India.
Many Indian People are strongly against Emigration.
Here, people strongly dislike the Idea of citizens of India settling abroad, studying on Indian people's hard earned money.
India called this phenomenon as "Brain Drain".
India spend huge amount of money to teach this people(IIT,IIM,central Institutions) and this people leave for another nation, making country at a loss.Later, this people are called Browns.

In medical field, its mandatory for doctors to sign a Bond to do service to the nation or pay HUGE fine to government for moving abroad.Right now,its 35/50 lakh INR(approx.$ 100,000).

When Donald Trump was elected as US president, almost all people of India had no issue with his decision of H1B problems because people here are already against brain drain.
Only those who live with Idea of grass is greener on other side will suffer from this.

I agree with this - India should fight to keep its most educated citizens.

You have to be careful though because forcing someone to be trapped in a country may also infringe on certain human rights.

Racism is the idea that all people of a race possess certain, usually negative, traits. Just believing that some, or even a majority, possess these traits is not necessarily racist. It might be bigoted, then again it might be true, thus I don't think it's fair to say it's necessarily racist.

So someone who thinks it's the culture that is fucked up, is likely not racist, when they see someone they will try to ascertain whether they are a part of that culture or whether they are like their 'different' friend.

As usual I might just be overly pedantic, but people often use this misuse of the word 'racist' to counter coinciding arguments.
