I'm not trying to defend whoever said those things to you, but are you sure they don't just try to be funny?
Do you never find 'racist' jokes funny?

Sometimes when people of all kinds of ethnicities say something and I think of a zinger I feel like I should say it. It's just jokes, and absolutely everyone gets joked about sometimes. I get that some people may take it too far and don't know when it's appropriate to joke around about stuff. Bare in mind this isn't jokes "lol ur skin is black" or "lol ur eyes are weird". That's rude and not funny.

Some months ago I was talking to an indian friend and he was talking about when his parents moved here. I asked him if they traveled with a plane or flying carpet. Am I racist too?

I want to live in a society where people are allowed to joke and it isn't 100% serious and PC all the time.

I personally look for intent. When someone jokes with me, I try to look past words and try to determine the intent. I simply can't label people racist for making jokes or generalizations about Indians. A lot of times these generalizations come from their experiences. Those generalizations themselves may be incorrect but it doesn't mean that they were made with racist or hateful intent. For example, if a white man or women is rude to me, I don't automatically assume that he/she is racist. There may be other explanations. May be the person was having a bad day. However, I have friends who immediately call such a person racist.

This is so true. I have friends like that who literally feel offended just because they have me and a black girl as friends and people call them racists. Then they would go on and joke about my Asian family and think "just kidding!" would disguise their inner racism.
I constantly have people ask me if I eat cats and dogs. I don't. When I ask them what makes them think cats and dogs are more superior than pigs and pigs deserve to be eaten, they could not find a legitimate reason that I couldn't counter argue with.

Some even asked me if I prefer my white family or Asian family.

I'm so tired of the society sometimes.
You are half asian?

And unfortunately i think its halo effect as for why people place dogs and cats higher than other animals. Cute = more worthy

I had mentioned this before. Looks matter so f*****g much, like everywhere

You are allowed to make racist jokes..and people are also allowed to be offended. IF their being offended bothers you then that is the real problem.

It's not air quotes around racist lol It's racist jokes.(period)...are they funny? Yes of course, sometimes. Are they offensive? yes sometimes they are.

again , racist has a broad definition..does not mean you want to push jewish people into ovens. You can be racist and have black friends and not wish anyone harm..it just means you feel superior in your own race to another race. (same as gender, religion etc) Its a spectrum..and i am not saying that to make light of it all I am saying it because i think people dont ever discuss it because someone says or writes something that is racist..someone says thats racist...and the person who said something racist is then offended...if you were not sensitive enough to tell the joke--then dont be sensitive when people criticize you or get offended. And have a discussion as to 'why' you find it funny and 'they' find it offensive--i dont mean strangers i mean your friends..IF You don't want that conversation then thats on you.

I'm very bias against religions..I have friends who are practicing various religions--but i see their absolute hypocrisy and i DO feel superior to them because i think religion is stupid concept. I don't get into it with them because end of day why offend them? they are my friends? i don't censor myself but i also don't tell them offensive jokes when i see them that they may find offensive. It is just a respect level i have for them as my friends.

I dont think its that because pigs are f*****g cute LOL

I think its because we grew up with cats and dogs as our pets we interact with and bond with.

I have hard time eating pork since i started learning that pigs like to play and socialize..Im not saying i never eat it anymore but I think i just never thought of them as emotional beings as i did cats and dogs.

Right but he said so definitively that he NEVER experienced racism in the 12 years he has lived here...Sounds like he probably did but is in denial..If he can never know their intent--he can never know if he has expreirnec racism...so how can he made a statement so strong that he never experienced racism in USA..

A lot of farm animals are intelligent. So it stands to reason they are emotional like dogs and cats are

And well you may think pigs are cute but in general they are considered uglier.

You think people assume the emotional intelligence of animals they most likely are not interacting with unless on dinner plate? LOL yeah that is a strong counter argument.

a lot of people do now thing pigs are cute after they see them interacting in a more healthy way where they are clean and playing etc.

yea usually that is the counter argument when people are asked why dogs are eaten and not pigs . i thought so myself but it was an assumption. i looked it up however and saw i was wrong.

Both intent and perception matter.

I've been working on my sense of humour lately, as my therapist has told me that I have a good sense of humour. I deliver jokes (when I think of them) and gauge the audience reaction.

An issue is that whether or not a joke is well-received depends on each of the quality of the joke, the context, the charisma person delivering the joke, the delivery of the person delivering the joke, and the audience, each of them matter. Stand-up comics say that they get better or lesser reactions in this and that down, implying against that the audience matters.

Therefore, I think that the ability to predict reception is a skill, a good skill to have, and thus it's not all up to the audience to gauge intent.

I talk liberally about anything, though we don't get to cover everything in 45 minutes. I trust the patient-client confidentiality laws. As fucked up as I am, she's seen worse for sure so I'm not worried about horrifying her.

She is not red pilled, that doesn't mean she's ignorant. I have room to improve both with respect to looks and with respect to social skills and emotional acuity. I do not expect her to help me with everything and that would be an irrational expectation regardless; if she can help me with some things then that is sufficient.

She doesn't say much about herself actually, sometimes I try to get info about her out of her for kicks and I fail. I suspect that she's extremely blue pilled.

Hair loss came up a few times but it's not the main thing we discuss. We've talked about my work ethic, my childhood, my rapport with women, online dating, my relationship with food, with message boards, and erectile dysfunction.

Should you go the therapy route, and I think it would do you good to do so with an open mind, I encourage you to give it time and to put it in its proper context. Most of us here have a lot of issues to deal with, therapy can be a good component to a general programme of healing.

Interesting. and that is true they can't fix your life. i dont wan't to pry but have you been diagnosed with any disorders?

and yea actually i used to go to therapy, for a few years with a woman believe it or not. for "adjustment disorder" which basically means stresses from life changes. it was nice having someone to vent to. i just don't want to start all over again. i think she got out of the practice because i tried making an appointment again but couldn't find her.

Well, why not ask them if they know where she went?

If they have a diagnosis of me, I don't know what it is.

It's not. However, when I can't gauge intent I give people benefit of doubt instead of assuming that they are racist.

Yeah ofc. I joke a lot too but I try not to joke about one's nationality or ethnicity too often. Your magic carpet joke is not even a generalisation. Just a silly reference to a Disney movie. Some people would latch onto jokes about ethnicity/nationality and use it all the fk time! Like I had a friend who would seriously make fun of my culture on a weekly basis (we used to be very close) now we are no longer friends. I simply got sick of him.

He can pass as an Indian in term of looks but Aladdin is an Arab/Middle Eastern story. The name Aladdin is also an Arab/Middle Eastern name. It has nothing to do with India. Although Indian Muslims, in order to imitate Arabs, often take Arabic names.
