I heard in Switzerland it is mandatory to own a gun. They don't have an army there. But everyone is armed. And they spend their money on education.

In Bosnia, everyone is armed too, and run by cartels. I think there is a critical threshhold of wealth and education people must have before being armed makes them a peaceful society. I think the United States is above the threshhold, but barely.

don't think so...

That reminds me of an amusing situation from several years ago: some small town in Alabama had passed a city ordinance stating that every citizen _must_ own a gun!

They didn't actually intend to enforce that law, of course; they just used it to make their own little commentary about all those anti-gun people in some parts of the country whom they considered to be "effete liberals"! :)

A lot of their gun owners are army reservists.

the swiss have fewer guns than the americans.[/quote:1jylct2h]

Semi auto rifles are banned

you can still get a handgun or a bolt action rifle but you need a good reason ie your life is in danger or you're a farmer

I'm sort of in the middle on this one. Assault rifles, in my view, should be banned, for many reasons.
Hunting rifles, on the other hand, should be sold freely and not licensed.
Why? Because assault rifles were designed solely to kill large amounts of people very quickly, and unless you're planning a trip to Baghdad, you don't need one.
Hunting rifles are made to kill animals, and if someone wants to hunt deer or elk or whatever, no skin off my back. I see it as a more dangerous version of fishing, and I've never heard anyone talk about banning fishing. Maybe thats because fish aren't especially cute.

How does anyone know when or if you will need an assault rifle? I think people rely on their govts way too much for protection. Besides I also use mine for target practice....im not planning to kill random people with it lol

We the way things are headed in the US, I believe any liberty loving American should own one.

Im sure the founders would agree with me :)

The costs of having assault rifles in our country are too high too justify having them around for target practice. Ask a cop how they feel about assault rifles in civilian hands...
I don't imagine you intend to shoot people with it, but other people might. Remember that LA bank robbery?
Where are things going in the US that you need a gun? What would liberty loving americans do with guns? Defeat the US Air Force in a fight with the gov't?
Why are you sure the Founders would agree with you? There's absolutely nothing in the constitution about assault rifles.

Wow. I really don't know how to use the quote feature.
The bold part is my response, since I'm too dense to use quotes properly.

The North Hollywood shootout used fully auto ILLEGAL AK47s

I couldn't buy one of those unless I did on the black market and flew to Iraq

Most guys I shoot target with are cops

I have my assault rifle and I aint giving it to anybody anyways so you can disagree with it but mines staying right in my safe where it is happy and nicely maintained :)

an armed society is a free society

You talk about fighting the air force? If sh*t went down most military wouldn't fire on civilians (but many would IMO)

but yes it is a weapon and it is meant to kill just like any old handgun

there is nothing in the constitution saying you may not own an assault rifle the right of the people to bear arms shall not be infringed

the 2nd amendment has nothing to do with hunting or sports shooting but you dont have to agree with it but it is there and for good reason

The second amendment says arms...
"Arms\, n. pl.

1. Instruments or weapons of offense or defense.
He lays down his arms, but not his wiles. --Milton."

If some people have assualt rifles, I want a tank to protect myself from them when they get angry, or maybe a shoulder fired missile.
Those are "arms".
My point about the Air Force was that those opposed to any gun control legislation often say that we need guns in case the gov't. turns into a tyranny. I think that if you have the military on your side, against the gov't, you win. If you don't, you lose. No untrained civilian is going to defeat the US military, regardless of what firepower they may or may not possess.
My point with the tanks and missiles is that those are also arms, and if you accept that those should be illegal, then you accept that the gov't. should be able to put limits on what sort of "arms" we are able to own as Americans.
The times when civilians, untrained by the military, will be called on to defend the country have passed. When untrained civilians attempt to defend the country, its known as vigilantism.

many of us outside of the US consider that supposedly good reason to be a bit tin foil hat'ish.

It was put there in times before a standing army existed.
A "well regulated militia" does not exist anymore, unless you count those nuts in Michigan that were in on the OKC bombing.
